HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. (AP) - Residents on Hilton Head Island want a company that gives Segway scooter tours to turn in a different direction.

The Island Packet of Hilton Head reports (https://bit.ly/QPExZY) that since Segway of Hilton Head opened two weeks ago, owner Steve Schultz said he has received numerous complaints from those walking or biking near Coligny Circle.

State law allows Segways on sidewalks. But Schultz said he understands the confusion from those who think they are prohibited. A 2002 state statute makes an exception for Segways on “sidewalks, roadways, bicycle routes, paths or trails.”

Hilton Head Town Manager Steve Riley said he has to comply with state law, but added he is not excited about Segway groups potentially clogging busy tourist areas.
