DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - A 49-year-old Des Moines man charged with sexually abusing children at an in-home daycare run by his wife has struck a deal with prosecutors.
The Des Moines Register says (https://dmreg.co/1hxX5by) David Glenn Smith this week entered an Alford plea to five counts of indecent contact with a child.
An Alford plea means a defendant doesn’t admit guilt, but agrees that evidence is strong enough to convict them.
Smith will be sentenced on June 13.
Police learned of the alleged abuse after one of the children told a parent, and an investigation revealed that several had either been abused or witnessed abuse.
The day care has been shut down. Smith’s wife has not been charged, and police say they don’t believe she was aware of any abuse.
