SAND LAKE, N.Y. (AP) - State police say an upstate New York mother and her father-in-law are facing assault and other charges after withholding food from the mother’s two five-year-old sons.

Senior Investigator Jeffrey Ullman says Saturday a tipster told authorities in February the brothers were being starved by Dana Glasser and Joseph Glasser in their Sand Lake home. Ullman says the boys were so thin their ribs were visible.

He says their father wasn’t around during the alleged abuse. He says two other sisters appear to be in good health. All the children are in the care of a family member.

The 33-year-old mother and the 61-year-old paternal grandfather were arraigned Friday and are in custody. Their lawyer didn’t immediately return a message seeking comment.

Sand Lake is about 20 miles east of Albany.
