MESA, Ariz. (AP) - Police say a man caught robbing a home in Mesa and who allegedly stabbed a canine officer is dead.

Mesa police say a resident called authorities around 7 p.m. Saturday to report confronting a suspected burglar at a neighboring home.

Authorities say officers fired bean-bag rounds at 32-year-old Chad Bogle, who was then bitten by a police dog.

Police say Bogle dragged the canine, Jake, inside and stabbed him several times.

The suspect then reportedly went outside waving a handgun.

Police say they fired more than once at Bogle and a SWAT team found him dead inside with a handgun nearby.

Police do not know if his injuries were from officers or self-inflicted.

They say Jake is expected to survive his injuries.
