COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Three Ohio schools have been honored for their work to produce a green-friendly school environment.

Milton-Union Exempted Village School in Miami County, West Geauga High School in Geauga County and Metro Catholic School in Cuyahoga County are among 48 schools selected as Green Ribbon Schools. The U.S. Department of Education award is given to schools for their work to reduce environmental impact and utility costs, promote better health, and ensure effective environmental education.

The education department said in a statement last week that schools in 27 states were nominated by 30 state education agencies. Those selected for the award include 39 public and nine private schools that serve various grade levels from kindergarten through 12th grade.

Twenty-one of the honorees serve a disadvantaged student body and 17 are rural.
