BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - A team of University of Alabama at Birmingham engineering students is competing in a race of energy-efficient vehicles.

The competition wraps up Sunday in Houston and pits team across the country against each other to see which vehicle can travel the furthest while using the least energy. Vehicles must travel 10 laps around a track, totaling six miles, then judges measure the fuel left behind.

According to a university statement, the four UAB seniors used a carbon-fiber frame to keep their vehicle lightweight and hope to reach 100 miles per gallon.
