SPARKS, Nev. (AP) - A 32-year-old Sparks man has been arrested on suspicion of a half-dozen charges after police say he strangled his wife near the Sparks Marina then fled with their 11-year-old son.

Officers responded to a report of a woman screaming for help along Harbour Cove just north of the marina about 4:30 a.m. Sunday.

Witnesses told police that Joel Hernandez-Santos forced his son to jump fences and hide for nearly an hour before investigators caught up with them about a half-mile from the marina.

Police say Hernandez-Santos was carrying a stolen gun. He’s been booked into the Washoe County Jail on charges of domestic strangulation, domestic battery, child abuse, child endangerment, false imprisonment to avoid arrest, a convicted felon in possession of a firearm and possession of stolen property.
