PLATTE CITY, Mo. (AP) - A northwest Missouri high school football player accused of assaulting another player during a game has pleaded guilty and sentenced to probation.

Platte County Prosecuting Attorney Eric Zahnd said in a release that 18-year-old Colin W. Byrd of Kansas City pleaded guilty Tuesday to misdemeanor assault and was sentenced to two years of supervised probation. Zahnd says Byrd’s probation includes anger management classes, 100 hours of community service, restitution and an apology letter to the victim.

Byrd was accused of ripping off an opponent’s helmet and striking him in the head with it during an October football game between Platte County R-3 and Winnetonka High School. The assault occurred after a play in which Byrd and the victim ended up out of bounds.

Zahnd says the victim suffered a concussion.
