OAK LAWN, Ill. (AP) - Authorities in suburban Chicago say an elderly woman was found dead after a fire at her home.

The Cook County medical examiner identified the woman as 73-year-old Kathryn Lomec. Officials say she died in the early Saturday fire at her Oak Lawn home. Oak Lawn Fire Chief George Sheets says Lomec’s caregiver was found unconscious in the home and taken to the hospital for treatment.

The medical examiner says Lomec died of carbon monoxide poisoning and smoke and soot inhalation.

The fire chief calls the blaze a “tragic situation.” He says fire fighters found fire blowing from the home’s living-room window. Sheets says firefighters broke down the front door and quickly extinguished the blaze.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
