PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Police say a student was arrested after a loaded handgun was found in his backpack at a west Philadelphia charter school.

A police spokeswoman said officers were called to the KIPP charter school in the Parkside section of the city shortly before 9:30 a.m. Wednesday.

The officers recovered the .45 caliber weapon and took the youth into custody without incident.

School CEO Marc Mannella said officials learned about the gun while investigating some kind of argument that had occurred earlier in the morning.

He told reporters that officials don’t believe the student brought the weapon “for any particular purpose” but told police he felt he needed it for protection on the way to and from school.

Police said the case is under investigation and no charges were immediately filed.
