PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - A Rhode Island lawmaker is again proposing longer terms for legislators, and limiting their service to a total of 2 years.
Rep. John Lombardi’s bill would ask voters to change legislative terms from two to four years, but impose a three-term cap so no lawmaker may serve more than 12 years.
Lombardi says the change would allow lawmakers to focus more on their service and less on upcoming elections. He says a term limit would ensure a flow of new leadership and new ideas in the General Assembly.
Lombardi’s proposal, if passed by the General Assembly, would go before voters this fall.
The Democrat from Providence introduced the same proposal last year but it didn’t get a vote.
