DOVER, Del. (AP) - Wildlife officials say one coyote was killed during the two and a half month hunting season that ended on March 10.
The Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control said Monday that the lone harvested coyote was shot by a deer hunter in the Hockessin area. No trappers caught a coyote.
David Saveikis, director of the Division of Fish and Wildlife, said the hunt indicates that the coyote population in Delaware is small.
The News Journal of Wilmington reports (https://delmarvane.ws/1oli7LS) that the state legislature ordered DNREC to develop rules for a hunting season after farmers said the coyotes pose a threat to livestock.
A six-month season for hunting coyotes will begin Sept. 1.
