CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) - Corey Bowles scored 22 points and grabbed 8 rebounds as Westside defeated Bridgeport 65-58 in the boy’s Class AA quarterfinals Wednesday.

Bridgeport never led in the contest as Westside opened the game on a 13-2 run and never surrendered the lead. Bowles netted 9 points in the first quarter and Justin Cogar tipped in 9. Westside hit all three of its firsthalf three-point baskets in the first quarter.

Westside continued to push as it extended its lead to 15 early in the second half until John Wilfong cut the deficit to 37-32 at the half with a buzzer-beater layup. The junior scored 10 of his game-high 24 in the second quarter.

The second half was a chess match between the teams as Wilfong opened with 4 points cutting the lead to three only to have Westside answer every challenge. Westside learned on stellar free-throw shooting to close out the contest as Bowles was a 7-of-8 in the contest.

Chase Robey sparked the four-quarter charge for Bridgeport scoring all six of his points in the final stanza. With Westside’s Mike Fox forced to the bench with four fouls early in the final quarter, Bridgeport failed to take advantage of the primary ball handler’s absence and never got closer than two.

Justin Cogar and Fox finished with a double-double. Cogar scored 17 points and collected 12 rebounds while Fox scored 17 points while dishing out 10 assists for fourth-seeded Westside (20-6). Dante Bonamico finished with 14 points and 7 rebounds and Ryan Sprouse added 10 points for fifth-seeded Bridgeport (18-8).

Westside moves on to the semifinals Friday at 1 p.m. where it will face top-seeded Robert C. Byrd. Bridgeport falls one game short of a return trip to the semifinals where it fell last season.
