LONACONING, Md. (AP) - Home opening day for the Baltimore Orioles is Lefty Grove Day in Allegany County.

The western Maryland county is paying tribute Monday to the homegrown Hall of Famer born 114 years ago in Lonaconing (LOH’-nah-koh-ning).

The county commissioners issued the proclamation last week.

Robert Moses Grove was a left-handed pitcher who played for the Philadelphia A’s and the Boston Red Sox. His 300 Major League victories helped him win election to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1947.

Grove died in Norwalk, Ohio, in 1975.
