LONDON (AP) - New inquests have begun into Britain’s worst sports disaster at the Hillsborough Stadium in 1989.

That comes after years of campaigning for new inquests. The families of the 96 Liverpool fans crushed to death at the stadium are hoping for verdicts of unlawful killing.

The High Court in London quashed the original accidental death verdicts last year after secret documents uncovered a cover-up by police.

The new hearings could take about a year, and a jury for the inquests was being selected on Monday at a courtroom in Warrington near Liverpool.

Liverpool is at the top of the Premier League, which it has not won since 1990.
