AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - A top law enforcement officer in Central Texas has arrested a suspected drunken driver after seeing the man’s vehicle stopped near Interstate 35.

Austin police Chief Art Acevedo (ah-suh-VAY’-doh), who runs a department of about 2,300 personnel, made the arrest himself Friday afternoon. An arrest report says the suspect was passed out behind the wheel.

Travis County jail records show 44-year-old Christopher Colvin was being held Tuesday on a driving while intoxicated charge. No attorney was listed for Colvin, whose bond was set at $10,000.

Officials say Acevedo was driving when he noticed an SUV stopped but with the engine still running in a turn lane near I-35. A police report says the chief saw an open container of beer in the vehicle and that Colvin smelled of alcohol.
