NEWPORT, R.I. (AP) - Residents of Prudence Island may soon choose among two ferries to Bristol.

The Newport Daily News reports (https://bit.ly/IX5CGL ) that the state Division of Public Utilities and Carriers has authorized A&R; Marine Corp. to run a ferry service between Prudence Island and Bristol by early June. It must meet conditions, such as having an adequate vessel and dock space.

The ruling also allows the service to serve Hog Island in Portsmouth.

A&R; Marine would compete with Prudence Ferry Inc., which has run ferry service since 1986 to and from Prudence Island.

The division ruled that the service is required by “public convenience and necessity.”

The state agency said it would meet with the two ferry services to adjust operating schedules.
