HUNTINGTON STATION, N.Y. (AP) - Police say a Long Island woman suspected of drunk driving fled with her three young children after crashing into a telephone pole.

Suffolk County police charged 30-year-old Sarah Knakal on Saturday under a 2009 law that made drunk driving with a child in the car a felony. They also charged her with leaving the scene and three counts endangering the welfare of a child.

Police say Knakal took off on foot after crashing into a pole and a sign on Jericho Turnpike in Huntington Station around 6 p.m., Saturday. They say officers located her and the children about 10 minutes later. The children were turned over to a family member and Child Protective Services was notified.

Information on Knakal’s lawyer wasn’t immediately available. She’s scheduled to be arraigned May 11.
