PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Gov. Lincoln Chafee has ordered Rhode Island flags on public buildings and grounds be flown at half-staff on Peace Officers Memorial Day.

President Barack Obama proclaimed that Thursday is Peace Officers Memorial Day and that all American flags be lowered to half-staff. The governor has ordered the same for state flags.

The day, which falls during National Police Week, is to honor federal, state and local law enforcement officers who have been killed in the line of duty. It dates to 1962.

Flags in Rhode Island will be returned to full-staff on Friday.
