WESTERLY, R.I. (AP) - State environmental officials from Rhode Island and Connecticut are combining efforts to improve the quality of water in the Pawcatuck River.

The Westerly Sun reports (https://bit.ly/1oqMeUP ) officials from Rhode Island’s Department of Environmental Management and Connecticut’s Department of Energy and Environmental Protection will discuss their plans Wednesday at a meeting at Westerly library.

They hope to lower bacteria levels in six river segments, focusing on better managing pollution from storm water, wastewater and agricultural, and animal sources.

A recent study called for some common sense pollution prevention efforts, including encouraging residents to pick up their pet waste and eliminating the source of illegal wastewater discharges.
