BETHEL, Alaska (AP) - The Bethel City Council is putting some teeth into the city’s leash law.

KYUK reports (https://is.gd/8esLil) the council Tuesday approved a resolution to have police enforce a law that was passed in 2011, requiring dogs to be on leashes.

Joan Dewey with Bethel Friends introduced councilmembers to Penny, a husky-mix who had a leg amputated earlier this year after being hit by a car.

Dewey said about every two weeks, a dog is either hit by a vehicle or shot by a homeowner. She says it’s only a matter of time before a child chasing a dog into the street is hit.

Nicholas Kwiek encouraged officials to provide a promised dog park. The ex-city manager proposed setting aside land and $13,000 for it, but the money was never budgeted.
