NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - A McMinn County grand jury has charged a Niota man with one count of voluntary manslaughter in connection with the shooting death of his nephew.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation says the grand jury indicted 35-year-old Marvin Derick Hayes earlier this week. TBI agents began investigating Hayes in March after they found his nephew, 22-year-old Brandon Lee Hayes, shot at the uncle’s home in Niota. The nephew was transported to the University of Tennessee Medical Center, where he later died.

The TBI says Hayes turned himself in to the McMinn County Jail. Jail officials said they have no information about whether Hayes has retained an attorney.

The TBI is asking that anyone with information on the case call agents at (800) TBI-FIND.
