SPRINGFIELD, S.D. (AP) - Officials trying to make a veterans memorial a reality in Springfield say they’ve raised enough money to pay for the granite.

Memorial committee chairwoman Connie Allen tells the Yankton Daily Press & Dakotan newspaper (https://bit.ly/1w8EFV1 ) that the granite makes up the majority of the memorial’s $155,000 cost. She says the committee has raised about $92,000 so far.

The memorial is planned on a site overlooking the Missouri River. Plans call for dedicating it on Veterans Day 2016. The committee so far has collected the names of about 1,350 veterans to put on the monument.
