CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) - Two West Virginia high school students are being recognized nationally for their academic accomplishments.

The West Virginia students are David Buch of Beckley and Nicole Hegele of Odd. Buch attends Woodrow Wilson High School and Hegele attends Shady Spring High.

They are among 141 seniors that are part of the 50th class of U.S. Presidential Scholars.

The program created in 1964 has honored more than 6,500 of the nation’s top-performing students.

It was expanded in 1979 to recognize students who demonstrate exceptional talent in the visual, literary and performing arts.
