CARROLLTON, Ga. (AP) - Police say a sheriff’s deputy shot a man wielding an ax.

WGCL-TV reports (https://bit.ly/QnMs04 ) that a deputy sheriff was called to a home Friday morning and found a man with an ax pacing back and forth. A caller said the man broke a window at the residence.

Authorities said the deputy ordered the 41-year-old suspect to drop the ax, which prompted the man to flee.

The officer chased the man into the backyard, where police said the suspect swung the ax at the deputy. The officer shot the suspect in the chest.

The man was flown to a hospital in Atlanta. His condition was not immediately known Friday evening.

Authorities at the Georgia Bureau of Investigation are investigating the case, which is standard when police are involved in shootings.
