OPINION:
Remember when Barack Obama used his presidency to declare a “Cuban thaw” and in December 2014, threw open America’s doors wide to forge a “new course in relations” with Cuban President Raul Castro and his communist government? Yeah. That went about as well as could be expected. Fast-forward to today.
From a just-released report called “Cuba: The Capital of 21st Century Communism,” compiled by the U.S. State Department — this: “For nearly seven decades, the Cuban regime has waged a sustained campaign of subversion against the United States. It is a campaign that has infiltrated the highest reaches of the U.S. government, recruited and cultivated generations of American activists, backed an unprecedented wave of left-wing terrorism on American soil, and carried out one of the most durable and damaging foreign intelligence penetrations in American history.
For nearly seven decades — that means Obama knew of Cuba’s intent to undercut the U.S. government, but he threw open doors to normalize relations anyway.
Thank goodness a new administration is seeking the danger and calling out the danger.
“Communism is a mortal threat to American liberty,” President Trump said during a July 3 speech at Mount Rushmore National Memorial in South Dakota. “It is the greatest threat to our country, including World War I, World War II, Pearl Harbor or even 9/11.”
He’s quite right.
Those were wars of military might and fight.
Communism is a propaganda-driven war for the heart, soul and mind of a citizenry — to sell the uninformed, undereducated, ignorant members of society on the beauty of free stuff and easy living while robbing the lovers of freedom and creators and producers and ingenious entrepreneurs of all their rightful earnings.
But back to Cuba.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced new sanctions on several of “the corrupt Cuban communist regime and its financial backers” this week, the latest U.S. move in line with Trump’s Executive Order 14404 that authorized sweeping actions against Cuba-tied individuals or entities that threatened America’s national security — including “against persons who support the Cuban regime’s security apparatus.” Hmm. Next stop, Hollywood?
Cuba’s communists have been a busy bunch.
As Rubio said, “The Cuban regime’s sprawling intelligence and ideological network helped to build the far-left in our country and in our hemisphere, and it remains inextricably linked to the far-left groups and movements across and beyond the West.”
The report lays bare the long-term efforts of Cuban communists to focus on societal and cultural change — targeting ideologies, rather than using military operations — to crumble U.S. freedoms. In other words, Cuba knows it can’t beat America’s military, so it instead sends subversives into America’s universities, government offices, political institutions.
Among the named collaborators with the communist country: Code Pink. Antifa. Oh — and today’s emerging favorite: the Democratic Socialists of America. Not surprising.
Like all the leftists do — including the Democrats — Cuba’s communists use Americans’ freedoms to destroy. They cite the First Amendment’s freedom of speech as justification for taking to the streets and screaming insanities at passersby. They lay claim to the First Amendment’s right to assemble to swoop into ICE operations and upset law enforcement — conveniently ignoring the fact that the Constitution specifically states “peaceably” in reference to the right to assemble. They hold fast to the First Amendment’s right to petition the government while calling on their angry, emotion-driven minions to storm-troop Republicans and conservatives and especially MAGAs and Supreme Court justices who oppose Roe v. Wade at their homes, at their places of work, at their places of dining and again, scream insanities.
And newer but growing ever more alarming, they grab tight to the First Amendment’s protection of religious freedom while joining hand-in-hand with the antisemites and Islamists and Muslim radicals who are currently using the Democrat Party to spread shariah and destroy the West and devastate the Constitution. This red-green alliance — it’s the communists’ next tool to subjugate and rule.
“The US State Department has listed several activists and organizations as ‘front groups and fellow travelers’ for Cuba, including [influencer] Hasan Piker and the Amazon Labor Union founder Chris Smalls,” The Guardian reported.
Rep. Ilhan Omar’s daughter, Isra Hirsi, is named. New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani is named. Journalist Amy Goodman is named.
It’s not that Americans were unaware of the links between violent leftist activists and the nonprofits and foundations that fund them — and later, that defend them in court. It’s that this report now gives the data and names that highlight the extent of communists’ infiltration in America.
Before Trump leaves office, there’s an opportunity to take decisive action and not just reel in the communist threat, but reel it in so intensely that it won’t rear its head in the United States for decades. And Americans themselves can help by getting back to church and by reading the Bible. Communism cannot exist in a country of believers who know their rights and liberties come from God.
