MORGAN CITY, La. (AP) - A St. Mary Parish jury took 45 minutes to convict a 40-year-old Morgan City man of killing a man whose body was stuffed into an ice chest and dumped in a ditch near a sugar cane field.

The Daily Review (https://bit.ly/1gh64dn ) reports that jurors convicted Darby Frickey on Thursday of second-degree murder in the death of 38-year-old Mark Berthelot.

The conviction carries an automatic life sentence. District Judge Edward Leonard Jr. scheduled formal sentencing June 20.

Both men’s families declined to comment about the verdict.

Frickey said he killed Berthelot in self-defense.

Berthelot was reported missing Nov. 10, 2011, from the Bayou Vista area. A farmer found Berthelot’s remains eight days later in a cane field on Highway 317 in Centerville. He had been bludgeoned and his throat was cut.
