WATERFORD, Conn. (AP) — The Nuclear Regulatory Commission says it is stepping up oversight at Connecticut’s nuclear plant following a safety violation.

The federal agency says it cited the Millstone Power Station for failure to address repetitive problems with a pump that is part of a back-up safety system.

The pump could be used to help cool the reactor in the event of an emergency shutdown. Inspectors found it been had been operated improperly from May 2013 through February 2014.

The NRC said Tuesday in a news release that the plant’s owner has acted to repair the pump and evaluate the cause of the problem. But it said there will be a team inspection at the plant because of the time it took for the problem to be addressed.
