If we had a Senate majority leader who provided real leadership, the Republicans could have used reconciliation in the Senate to defund President Obama’s amnesty, health-care and Planned Parenthood endeavors, giving the Democrats a dose of their own bad medicine that has harmed the lives and health of many Americans.

Instead we have a Senate majority liar, Mitch McConnell, who continues to lie and say that Republicans need 60 votes in the Senate in order to break a filibuster. The establishment wing of the Republican Party is not very different from the establishment wing of the Democratic Party. As a former member of the New York State Conservative Party, I’ve known for several decades that the enemies of conservatives are not the Democrats, but the Republican establishment. It is the establishment that blocks any and all debate — and in many cases, votes — on which many do not wish to have to go on the record and take a position.

I applaud the efforts of Sen. Ted Cruz, Texas Republican, for exposing this to the American people by putting up an amendment that would prohibit taxpayer funds from being allocated to Planned Parenthood for a year, and would defund the Iran nuclear deal. The amendment didn’t even get a vote.

People accuse conservatives of being intolerant of the positions of others, but nothing could be further from the truth. Conservatives want debate, not deal cutting. Conservatives do not want to elect any more deal makers, including Donald Trump. We need someone who understands and respects the U.S. Constitution.
