Steep Canyon Rangers

“Radio”

Rounder

Deep Southern sounds abound on the North Carolinians’ disc for Rounder records. “Radio” and “Diamonds in the Dust” are both boot-scootin’ country-tastic cuts, while “Blue Velvet Rain” is a minor-key dirge that asks burning questions about love and loss — all intertwined with magnificent vocal harmonics. Other great tracks include the sorrowful “Down That Road Again,” and “Wasted” is far from a misuse of your time. Album closes with the introspective “When the Well Runs Dry” and the toe-tapping “Monumental Fool.” The Rangers remind us of the wealth of sounds below the Mason-Dixon Line. Keep it coming, boys!
