NEW YORK (AP) - A New York City police officer is suing the city after he suffered a career-threatening knee injury on-duty in a NYPD van last year.

Thirty-eight-year-old Vincent Ferrante says he was injured on Dec. 19, 2014 while driving his patrol van through Sheepshead Bay.

The 14-year force veteran says he swerved to avoid a child and crashed into a tree, striking both knees on exposed pieces of metal in the van.

Attorney Joseph Giaramita says Ferrante warned his superiors about the van’s missing dashboard before his injury.

The New York Daily News reports (https://nydn.us/1hTiBvf ) the lawsuit, filed last week in Brooklyn Supreme Court, claims the city failed to maintain the vehicle in a “reasonably safe condition.”

Ferrante seeks unspecified damages for the injury that he says now requires him to walk with a cane.
