ANALYSIS/OPINION:

The U.S. Army discharges decorated and brave Sgt. First Class Charles Martland for having the temerity to stand up for young children in Afghanistan who are regularly raped and sexually abused by perverted old scumbags on an American military base. Sgt. Martland’s actions herald the best of American values — but the Army’s conduct in the final disposition of this case does not surprise me (“Green Berets have growing doubts of duties with skittish political leadership,’” Web, Aug. 30).

We have a president who constantly lectures us on our “American values” when it comes to unfettered illegal immigration — while silently ignoring the plight of thousands of black American children under siege from violence in our urban areas. We have 177 Democratic congressmen and -women who voted against providing medical intervention under law for a baby born during a botched abortion. We have Democrats making a mockery of a congressional hearing on Planned Parenthood’s federal funding following the news that the organization was profiting from selling baby body parts.

Did anyone really think this government would stand for real American values and direct the Army to reverse the decision to discharge Sgt. Martland? Did anyone think it would ask that the White House hold a Rose Garden ceremony as was done for Bowe Bergdahl? The Army’s conduct assures that the abuses of Afghani boys will continue whether we’re there or not.
