“Racist McShootface” became a trending topic on Twitter Friday afternoon after a bidder by that name offered $65 million for George Zimmerman’s gun used to shoot Trayvon Martin.

Tribune news services reported that an individual bearing the jokey username placed a $65 million bid for the pistol used in the fatal February 2012 shooting of the black teen. Mr. Zimmerman, who is Hispanic, is attempting to auction off the gun after it was recently returned to him by the Justice Department.

The inspiration may be derived in part from a joke name submitted earlier this year for a British research vessel, “Boaty McBoatface.”

Quite a few users replied with trademark Twitter wit.

“Racist McShootface has a brother who just bought O.J.’s knife. Congrats to Maniac McStabneck!” joked user @ThirtyYearOld.

“Everything about Racist McShootface is the most American thing that has ever happened. #Murrica,” tweeted Los Angeles-based journalist Alysanne Gronowitz.

“Who would have thought that someone by the name Racist McShootface would restore my faith in humanity and this country. #Merica,” quipped Los Angeles photographer Freddy Martinez.

Other users deployed the trending topic to take a swipe at the GOP’s presumptive presidential nominee.

“‘Trump will name Racist McShootface as his VP’ - John Miller #tcot #tlot #nevertrump,” tweeted user Max Twain, referring to reports alleging Mr. Trump has conducted phone calls pretending to be his own publicist, going by the name John Miller.

“Trump Republicans see the name Racist McShootface trending and immediately want to vote for him,” the progressive podcast CrabDiving tweeted.
