DALLAS (AP) - A woman has died when the car in which she was a passenger was hit by a backhoe being driven the wrong way on a Dallas freeway.

Police say was backhoe was owned by the city of Dallas and was stolen from a northwest Dallas worksite before dawn Sunday. A police statement says the thief was driving the machine the wrong way in the center lane of Interstate 35E when it was struck head on by an oncoming car, the front-end loader shredding the passenger side of the vehicle and killing 20-year-old passenger Elizabeth Suarez. The car driver, 22-year-old Diana Mejicanos (meh-hee-KAH’-nohs), was hospitalized. Her condition is unknown.

Witnesses said the Hispanic man fled on foot, bleeding from the face and leg. He wore black pants and grey hoodie.
