SALEM, Mass. (AP) - The former owner of a Beverly martial arts studio has been sentenced to up to 15 years in prison for beating his girlfriend so severely that she is permanently disfigured.

The Salem News (https://bit.ly/2eRoGrq ) reports that 40-year-old Joseph Louf was sentenced Tuesday by a judge who called his actions the product of “unprovoked, irrational and uncontrolled anger.”

Louf was convicted earlier of 11 charges, including mayhem and multiple assault and battery counts.

The 31-year-old victim said in an impact statement that by the time she ended the relationship she was nearly blind from two detached retinas, her nose was nearly flat against her face, and other facial features were distorted.

The couple met online in 2012.

Louf said the woman sustained her injuries in mixed martial arts fights.
