GREENVILLE, S.C. (AP) - A South Carolina sheriff’s deputy has shot and wounded a suspect who deputies say moved toward them with a knife.

Greenville County sheriff’s spokesman Ryan Flood said in a statement that deputies were called to the office of a nonprofit Tuesday to search for a person with outstanding warrants.

Flood said deputies saw a black man running away and determined he was wanted in Jasper County. He wasn’t the person deputies were seeking.

Deputies chased him and say he pulled a knife. Flood says deputies told him to drop the knife but he raised it and moved toward them. Flood says one officer fired.

The suspect was taken to a hospital. His name and condition haven’t been released.

State Law Enforcement Division spokesman Thom Berry says the officer is a white man.
