NORRISTOWN, Pa. (AP) - A longtime suburban Philadelphia defense lawyer has admitted under a plea deal that he raped an unconscious client at her apartment last year.

Vincent Cirillo Jr. pleaded guilty to rape on Tuesday hours into jury selection for his potential trial.

Prosecutors dropped four felony counts. They say the woman hired Cirillo last year to represent her in a criminal matter. She told police she believes Cirillo drugged her in August 2015 after someone found her unconscious on her bed in only her underwear.

Cirillo says he didn’t want to “risk the maximum amount of exposure” he would face if convicted.

Cirillo’s sentencing hasn’t been scheduled. He faces up to 10 to 20 years behind bars and could be designated a sexually violent predator.
