LOS ANGELES (AP) - Prosecutors have charged a man already on death row with a 1991 murder in Southern California.

The Los Angeles Times reports (https://lat.ms/2dv5u2R ) that prosecutors on Tuesday charged 57-year-old Dean Eric Dunlap with the unsolved murder. Cynthia White was strangled in San Bernardino County and her body was discovered by her boyfriend on May 27, 1991, about a week after investigators believe she died.

Dunlap has been in San Quentin State Prison since his 2005 conviction of killing, raping and kidnapping 9-year-old Sandra Astorga in 1992. The case made him the first man in San Bernardino County to be sentenced to death because of evidence found through the state’s DNA database.

Authorities say DNA was also crucial in tying him to the cold case.
