NICHOLS, N.Y. (AP) - State police say a 90-year-old New York man driving the wrong way on an upstate highway crashed into another vehicle, killing himself and injuring the other driver.

Troopers say they received a report around 3 p.m. Tuesday of a car driving west in the eastbound lanes of state Route 17 after leaving the rest area in the Tioga County town of Nichols, on the Pennsylvania border 25 miles west of Binghamton.

By the time troopers arrived John McCarthy of Elmira had crashed head-on into an eastbound vehicle driven by a 65-year-old woman from Rome, Pennsylvania.

McCarthy died at the scene. The Pennsylvania woman was treated for injuries that aren’t life-threatening at Robert Packer Hospital in nearby Sayre, Pennsylvania.

McCarthy’s body has been taken to a hospital for an autopsy.
