WDCA Channel 20, which is owned by District Fox affiliate WTTG Fox 5, is to be renamed “Fox 5 Plus,” announced Fox 5 General Manager Patrick Paolini. The new Fox 5 Plus will launch a daily 8 p.m. newscast called “Fox 5 News on the Plus.”

“Given Fox 5’s brand recognition, this extension gives us the ability to build upon our strength in the marketplace and provide our viewers with additional opportunities to watch Fox 5 News,” Mr. Paolini said in a statement.

Fox 5 newscasters Tony Perkins and Shawn Yancy will anchor “Fox 5 News on the Plus” Monday through Sunday. Fox announced that the new program will focus on local issues as well as national stories. Fox 5 Plus will also feed breaking content into the newscast.

WDCA will continue broadcasting syndicated shows such as “The Simpsons,” “Big Bang Theory” and “Dr. Oz,” and its prime-time schedule will maintain longtime mainstays like “Law and Order: Special Victims Unit” and “The X-Files.”

The Fox “duopoly” in the District is one of several across the country where Fox owns two stations. Other such markets include New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Dallas and San Francisco.
