ORANGEBURG, S.C. (AP) - South Carolina State is suspending women’s tennis and adding women’s golf for next year, a move to cut costs for the athletic department.

South Carolina State acting athletic director Doug Robertson announced the move Friday.

The Bulldogs women’s tennis team has won 11 of the past 12 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference titles. Robertson says the school can no longer fund the program in a way that “matches the championship caliber the team deserves.”

He says team members will have scholarships next year as the school looks for ways to get them back on the court.

The school also says it is adding women’s golf to maintain its NCAA Division I status.
