MOTT, N.D. (AP) - Summer will last a few days longer for students in a southwest North Dakota district as construction workers wrap up work on a new elementary building.
The new building for kindergarten through sixth grade in the Mott-Regent School District has been under construction since the fall and is running slightly behind schedule, The Bismarck Tribune reported .
Classes were set to begin Aug. 16. But Superintendent Viola LaFontaine said classes will now begin Aug. 28 to give more time for the project to finish.
LaFontaine said the contractor has extra workers to get close enough to completion to hold classes.
The building is an addition to the district’s education facilities. It will be open to the public on the first day of classes. A picnic will also be held that evening and will include a short program, tours and a ribbon cutting ceremony, along with grilled burgers and hot dogs.
School board member Tracy Kruger, of Regent, said she believes school patrons will take the slight delay in stride.
“I feel everyone is supportive and understanding of this. Overall, people are so excited - look what we’re getting,” she said.
Last year, Voters approved an $8.6 million bond levy to pay for the project.
