MINOT, N.D. (AP) - Scandinavian folk art classes will be offered during the annual Norsk Hostfest at the State Fairgrounds in Minot.

Early registration is now being taken for Hostfest University, the Minot Daily News reported.

Chairwoman Candi Helseth said people who sign up with early registration will get $20 off the price of admission to the fest on the day they attend their class.

“The longer you wait, the more you take the chance that the one you really want will be filled,” Helseth said.

This is the third year that Helseth will oversee the Hostfest University classes.

“It’s definitely growing,” Helseth said. “We have nine instructors this year and they are each offering two classes.”

Helseth said the classes are $75 in addition to the cost of materials. They’re intended for adults, but children 12 and older will be allowed to enroll with parent permission.

Tammy Barclay, who will teach Nordic knitting courses, will show her students how to create a headband that Scandinavians wear to protect their ears. She will also teach how to knit a Nordic beret.

Helseth said Barclay will integrate the history of knitting in Norway into her classes. According to the Hostfest website, the art of knitting began in Selbu, Norway.

Other classes will show its students Scandinavian folk art practices that include embroidery, quilting and wood carving.

Helseth said surveys show that the classes most demanded at the fest are those related to jewelry making, carving and rosemaling, which includes painting flower motifs.

“We have classes in all of those with instructors that are extremely well-qualified,” Helseth said.

The Norsk Hostfest is scheduled to take place in late September.
