FAIRFIELD, Conn. (AP) - Paul Schlickmann has been named athletic director at Fairfield University, after serving in a similar post at Central Connecticut for the last seven years.

Fairfield University President Mark Nemec says he believes Schlickmann will help elevate Fairfield’s varsity athletics programs, noting that Central Connecticut programs won 20 Northeast Conference championships during his tenure, the most in any seven year period in the Division I history of the school.

He also praised Schlickmann’s success as a fundraiser, which resulted in a 60 percent increase in annual giving to CCSU athletics.

Schlickmann, who begins work on Sept. 11, replaces Gene Doris, who announced his retirement in May after a 23-year career with the Stags. Doris will stay on as a special adviser to the president until the end of the calendar year.
