SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - A Sandy man is accused of attacking his father and a 14-year-old family member with a machete, severing the father’s finger and leaving both victims with deep cuts and other injuries.

Police allege in court documents that 26-year-old Sione Fono Vaitai on May 12 held a machete to the teen’s throat at a home in Sandy. Vaitai’s father tried to intervene but Vaitai struck and cut both his father and the teen with the knife.

Police say the teen pretended to be dead. Vaitai fled but was arrested three days later.

The Deseret News reports (https://bit.ly/2rO8WPl ) Vaitai is charged with attempted murder and other crimes.

He has not yet entered a plea. Defense attorney Wesley Howard said Friday that he was recently assigned to the case and had not had time to review it in order to comment.
