ANALYSIS/OPINION:

Is America still the last, best hope for mankind? That status could have slipped some on our watch (see Iraq, deficit spending). And we have been a bit stupid (see Citizens United, concealed carry, extended ammo clips). Well, our nation was founded on money and violence (see slavery, native genocide). But remember also the Civil War, women’s suffrage, civil rights and gay rights, and remember America’s extraordinary labor-saving and

life-lengthening contributions to humanity.

Does the good still outweigh the bad? Some things are true everywhere and forever. Along with aging power and wealth come complacency, bigotry, oppression and waste. Along with awesome weapons comes the itch to use them. Along with hucksters come victims. And along with youth and immigrants comes vitality. It is with these strong hands that America’s promise and its conscience are constantly renewed.
