A day after President Donald Trump tweeted that “China tried” to fix the North Korean problem but “it wasn’t working,” a high-level meeting was held between the Chinese and American officials.  Secretary of State Rex Tillerson made it very clear that if China did not reign in its protege in Pyongyang, the United States would.

“We reiterated to China that they have a diplomatic responsibility to exert much greater economic and diplomatic pressure on the regime if they want to prevent further escalation in the region,” Mr. Tillerson told reporters at a joint news conference with Defense Secretary Jim Mattis, reported Reuters.

The death of Otto Warmbier this week after being brought home from North Korea in a coma after 17 months of captivity added fresh impetus to the problem of Kim Jong-un.

The North Korean regime has embarked on a flurry of ballistic missile tests, nuclear weapons tests, assassination of relatives in foreign airports, and flying drones over South Korean territory.  It seems President Trump may have had enough.

The meeting was also used to discuss Chinese militarization of the South China Sea and international shipping lanes. Mr. Tillerson and Defense Secretary Jim Mattis met with Chinese State Councilor Yang Jiechi and General Fang Fenghui, chief of joint staff of the People’s Liberation Army.
