FRESNO, Calif. (AP) - Authorities say they’re investigating the death of a 21-year-old man booked a week earlier into a Central California jail on felony assault charges.

Tony Botti of the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office said Wednesday that a lifeless Augustin Angel Chavez was found in his cell over the weekend.

Botti says detectives interviewed an inmate sharing a cell with Chavez and others housed nearby; they don’t consider any of them suspects.

Authorities say an autopsy didn’t reveal what killed Chavez. They await the results of more test results.

They say that Chavez had a long criminal history.

Botti says the department didn’t make the jail death public for four days because his is the sole public information officer and had been out of the office.

The investigation is ongoing.
