SCITUATE, R.I. (AP) - Rhode Island’s State Fire Marshal is stepping down.

The state Department of Public Safety said Wednesday that John Chartier is retiring, effective June 30, after nine years as director of the Division of State Fire Marshal.

Chartier has served as a fire chief at the Warwick Fire Department, where he worked for 30 years before becoming State Fire Marshal.

James Gumbley, the current deputy chief in the Division of State Fire Marshal, has been appointed to fill Chartier’s role temporarily while a search is conducted to find a permanent replacement.
