PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - A machete-wielding bank robber has been sentenced to three years in federal prison.

The U.S. attorney’s office in Providence says John Ryder was sentenced on Wednesday for robbing a BankRI branch in Coventry of around $6,000 in May 2016.

The 29-year-old West Warwick man pleaded guilty in October to bank robbery. U.S. District Judge William Smith also ordered him to serve three years supervised released once his prison term is up.

The U.S. attorney’s office says Ryder acknowledged when he entered his guilty plea that he brought the machete into the bank with him and wielded it while demanding cash from the tellers. He fled into woods behind the shopping plaza where the branch was located, and was arrested two weeks later.
